About Theinstituteforhumanecology

Why We Start Inside the Cabinets

Theinstituteforhumanecology is a kitchen remodeling contractor working in Irvine, and the way we run a first visit is a little unusual. Before we talk about door styles, countertop colors or appliance packages, we open the cabinets. We pull the drawers, shine a light into the sink base, check the corners with a level and look at how the boxes were put together. What we find there decides most of the rest of the conversation.

The reason is simple. Cabinets are the largest single line on almost every kitchen remodel budget, and a good share of the kitchens we see do not need new ones. They need new faces, better hardware, a fix for one damaged box or a layout change that only affects part of the room. Other kitchens really are finished, with swollen particleboard, drawers that have pulled apart and a layout that fights the people cooking in it. Both situations are common here, and they call for very different projects.

The Kitchens We Work In

Much of our work is in the older villages, where 1970s and 1980s homes still have their original oak cabinets and tile counters. Those cabinets are often worth keeping. We also work in newer neighborhoods where builder-grade kitchens are starting to wear, and in condos and townhomes where shared walls, HOA review and limited parking shape how the job gets scheduled.

How We Handle a Project

When refacing makes sense, we reface. When it does not, we explain why in terms you can check yourself, and we quote a replacement that includes the things people forget: the counters that will not survive tear-out, the electrical work that triggers a permit, and the weeks you will be cooking somewhere else. Work that changes plumbing, circuits or walls goes through a City of Irvine permit and inspection.

We do not pad a kitchen with work it does not need. If new pulls, adjusted hinges and a coat of paint would make you happy, we would rather tell you that now than sell you a kitchen you did not have to buy.
